Urban metabolism (UM) is a systems approach for assessing sustainability by measuring the total energy, materials, and waste products that flow into and out of an urban area
CCSC’s Urban metabolism approach is an enhancement to quantifying the sustainability of a built environment. This new methodology enhances typical urban metabolism in three ways:
1. Better granularity of data
2. Captures economic flows
3. Accounts for life cycle factors (cradle-to-grave effects)
